Traditional front castors on active wheelchairs are small - great for keeping the weight of your chair down and fine on pavements, but incapable of tackling gravel, dirt paths, grass or sand. The FreeWheel lets you overcome this, the large wheel making it easier to roll over more adventurous terrain.
Once installed by us, the FreeWheel takes just seconds to clamp on and off, letting you switch between normal and off-road use of your wheelchair with ease. It will fit to most rigid wheelchairs, dependent on footrest setup, and an optional folding adaptor is available at an additional cost to fit to a folding chair.
The FreeWheel is the industry-standard front wheel attachment, refined over years of use, and renowned for its practicality and solid build. Made from strong, aircraft-grade aluminium, the patented design has no sharp edges, and features a discreet black appearance.
Our Verdict
If you're taking your wheelchair off-road, you will need a front-wheel wheelchair attachment. Unless you are getting a powered solution such as a handbike, the FreeWheel is the obvious choice. It is usually paired with a set of off-road rear wheels like the popular FAT Wheels or Loopwheels Extreme.
We would recommend Rehasense's Track Wheel as worth considering instead, as it has a lighter carbon fibre frame, and also has a dual-arm version for attachment to folding chairs. It is also cheaper than the FreeWheel.
