The standout feature on the Strongback is its unique seating. The curved back promotes proper posture, resulting in a healthy upright position rather than the slumping often seen in other manual chairs. The seat angle aligns the pelvis for proper ergonomic posture, as well as preventing slipping and slouching forwards. The result is a wheelchair that provides proper lumbar support, reducing pain and curvature to the spine.
The wheelchair caters just as well to the attendant pushing it - it is lightweight at a mere 11.3 kg, making it easy to push and lift. The backrest folds flat, and the frame folds together in just seconds, allowing it to fit easily in the back of a car. The push handles are spaced wide apart to offer the correct stance for maximum control when pushing.
The Self-Propelled version of the Strongback features large rear wheels with handrims. This allows the occupant to propel themselves - giving them more freedom, particularly to get around their residence. The larger wheels also provide a smoother ride than small transit wheels. Finally, the SP version has an enhanced 21 stone weight capacity, allowing it to cater to heavier people.
While the self-propelled wheels are a little heavier than the transit ones, they are quick-release, allowing them to be lifted separately to the wheelchair if required.
Our Verdict
The seating on the TGA Strongback Self Propelled Wheelchair is unique, and really needs to be tried out to be appreciated. For people with back problems, or who tend to slouch it provides much better support and comfort than other basic manual wheelchairs. However, for those with more advanced seating requirements, then a prescriptive made to measure wheelchair such as Invacare's Action 3NG or Rea Azalea may be more suitable.
We think the Self-Propelled version is the ultimate iteration of the Strongback - providing improved comfort, independence and carry capacity.
The Strongback is also the ideal wheelchair to partner with a TGA Powerpack for effortless pushing.
