Power base
While rear-wheel drive chairs have traditionally struggled to match the manoeuvrability of mid-wheel drive when used inside, the Sunrise Medical Quickie Q100 R Powerchair is a definite exception. Fed up with scratching the sides of your chair? With an ultra-compact 21 inch (54 cm) width, that worry is in the past. The Q100 R can take you places other powerchairs can't go - there isn't another truly outdoor capable rear-wheel drive powerchair this narrow.
Despite its small size, the Q100 R does not compromise on outdoor performance, offering a level usually found on much larger powerchairs. With Smart Base technology, it has been engineered to maximise traction and stability. Punchy 55 Ah batteries provide a range of up to a hefty 19 miles - and being able to easily fit into buses and other public transport further extends the distance you can travel. The optional low-impact kerb climber allows you to climb up to 4 inches (10 cm), even at low speeds or from a standing start - you won't need a run-up any more! The kerb climber discreetly sits out of the way of your feet, rather than dominating the front of your wheelchair.
Fully crash-tested for occupied transport in a vehicle, the Q100 R is also ideal for hoisting. It weighs just 95 kg, and the compact size allows it to easily fit into most cars. This is further aided by the fold-down backrest, and the removable armrests and legrests.
Standard Seating
While the Q100 R doesn't feature the advanced configurable seating systems of more expensive powerchairs, it still features a surprising array of adjustments to allow a perfect fit - and for the seat to adapt to your needs as things change. This includes the seat width and depth, backrest and seat angles, armrest height and side guard position, as well as the seat height and legrest width. The 5-strap tension adjustable backrest can be set to offer the comfort and postural support you require, and can be upgraded to the JAY Shape backrest should further precision be required. A Sedeo headrest and lateral supports can be fitted if required, and the full range of Sunrise Medical's Uni legrests - including elevating leg rests and amputee supports - will fit to your Q100 R.
Sedeo Lite seating
As of 2020, the Q100 R has been updated with the option of the Sedeo Lite seating system, offering enhanced comfort and configurability, which is ideal for people spending longer periods of time in their powerchair. This can be set up to your precise size, and has a wide array of cushions, backrests and positioning accessories to choose from. Additionally, a centre-mount footrest is now available whatever seating system you go for, making the Q100 R even more manoeuvrable.
Style
The streamlined, minimalistic design offers a level of style well above the norm, and the matt black frame, shroud and wheels can be personalised with a choice of four colour options.
Our Verdict
Overall, the Quickie Q100 R is a highly impressive powerchair, and as the lowest-price outdoor capable Sunrise Medical powerchair, offers an affordable way of getting the performance and reliability of a premium manufacturer. It is ideally suited to people who want a relatively inexpensive chair that can be made to fit them, and who don't want to face compromises either indoors or out. It offers a significant step up over "out the box" models - with far more adjustability, a more compact frame, and far more modern styling. Karma's new Blazer 2 is worth considering alongside the Q100 - it's not quite as compact but offers a 6 mph top speed and is cheaper.
With the addition of Sedeo Lite seating the Q100 R is now a viable choice for those who wish to sit in their powerchair most of the day, although it lacks the powered seating options found on other models. Its "bigger brother" the Q200 R is worth considering if you require powered tilt or powered recline, and is also a better performer outdoors - and only marginally more expensive.
