Carbon Frame
While carbon wheelchairs have been available for a few years, Sunrise Medical persisted in optimising their manufacturing techniques before launching a carbon fibre wheelchair, to ensure they got the perfect balance of strength and rigidity. This was achieved with the unique X-Braid technology; while traditional manufacturing techniques involve layering carbon, braiding creates a constant weave in the frame tubing, ensuring a precise and consistent result each time and that there are no weak links. Five times stronger than steel, and both stiffer and lighter than any other material available, carbon fibre is the ultimate material for a lightweight wheelchair, and the Krypton is the best in its class.
Each part of the Krypton was only approved when Sunrise Medical's engineers were entirely happy with it, and it has been tested in conditions ranging from freezing cold -20°C to desert heat of 70°C. The aerospace engineered carbon fibre frame is strong where necessary and light where possible - no ageing test has worn down the Krypton, and it is truly designed to stand the test of time. At the heart of the Krypton F is a faultless formed cross brace that fits so neatly under the seat that it's barely noticeable, giving a very minimalistic open-framed feel. The supreme rigidity of the frame is unrivalled on a folding chair, and the outstanding energy efficiency lets you travel more meters per stroke.
Transport
The Krypton F can be folded to an extremely compact size, with the option of a folding backrest too to further reduce the space it takes up. As the lightest folding carbon wheelchair in the world, the Krypton F is a breeze to transport in a car, weighing from just 5.8 kg with the quick-release wheels popped off.
Adjustability
The Krypton F follows in the finest Quickie traditions of remaining a highly adjustable wheelchair, based on an understanding that everyone has a different shape and size, and thus the importance of having a wheelchair bespoke to you. There are over 10,000 configurations for the Krypton F, and we can assess and recommend the best configuration for you shape, lifestyle and requirements. While the Krypton isn't quite as adjustable as chairs lower down the range such as the folding Xenon2 or QS5X, there is still a significant amount of post-build fine-tuning available such as the infinitely adjustable centre of gravity, both front and rear seat heights, and the backrest angle.
Styling
From every angle, the Krypton F is conceived to portray beauty, and the elegant carbon frame has a selection of finishes available - from the natural raw carbon finish (that also saves a further 100 g of weight), to the luxury transparent gloss, and understated transparent matt finish - or have your frame in classic black, whether matt or gloss. You can then style your ride further with a choice of three bold accent colours, adding a splash of personality to your Krypton and letting you design a wheelchair that you can cherish for the years to come.
Our Verdict
The pinnacle of folding wheelchairs, the Sunrise Medical Quickie Krypton F Folding Wheelchair is unbelievably light, as well as offering an extremely stiff and responsive ride unlike anything you will have experienced from a folding-framed wheelchair before. This unrivalled driving performance makes the Krypton F the clear flagship of the Quickie range, deservedly sitting above the Xenon2 in their range, as the ultimate lightweight folding wheelchair.
The Krypton F has a fixed front frame, which is the lightest option available. However, some people need swing-away legrests to aid in either transfers or foot positioning. In that situation, we would recommend the carbon-framed folding Helio C2, which has swing-away legrests.
