Power Base
Quantum's Q6 Edge HD is the leading mid-wheel drive bariatric powerchair on the market. While most other bariatric wheelchairs traditionally have front-wheel drive, which can be tricky to control for those new to electric wheelchairs, the Q6 Edge HD has mid-wheel drive. Far more intuitive to drive, it is extremely manoeuvrable indoors, and ATX suspension provides solid and comfortable performance outdoors. Fully crash-tested, the Q6 Edge HD can be used for occupied transportation in a suitably adapted vehicle.
Seating
There is a choice of two versatile seating systems - the basic Synergy seat, which offers an affordable seating option for those without advanced needs, and the advanced Tru-Balance 3 seating, which provides enhanced comfort and support for people who spend longer periods of time in their wheelchair. A range of seat sizes are available, to provide a perfect fit, while numerous cushion, backrest, headrest, legrest and other seating options can be fitted to cater to your exact postural, pressure relieving and comfort needs.
HD powered tilt of up to 45° provides relief from pressure, while powered elevating legrests and 175° recline allow you to lie flat. The Edge HD can also be upgraded with the iLevel seat lifter, which allows you to drive at 3.5 mph while fully elevated. As the name suggests, this allows you to drive at eye level - in contrast to most other powerchairs with powered lift, which are limited to crawling along at slow speeds. Being at eye level enhances social interactions, even when on the go. Faster actuators allow the full lift to be attained within 24 seconds, all at the press of a single switch.
Controls
A choice of controls is also available, including advanced R-Net and Q-Logic 3 control systems, which include the option for LCD colour joysticks, making controlling your powerchair easier than ever. Style is not neglected, with the Quantum chairs renowned for their modern looks, and a choice of shroud colours are available.
Our Verdict
The Quantum Q6 Edge HD Powerchair compares favourably with other bariatric powerchairs, coming in at a much more affordable price point, and with far more powered seating options than pricier models such as the Quantum 1450, as well as a higher weight capacity and larger seat sizes than Invacare's HD powerchairs. It also features more modern and intuitive mid-wheel drive, as against the front-wheel drive more usually seen on bariatric chairs. We therefore recommend the Edge HD as the best bariatric powerchair on the market - for cost, style, performance and configurability.
