Karma VIP 2 Wheelchair

The VIP 2 is a unique tilt in space wheelchair that is able to be folded up to fit in the back of your car. Traditional tilt in space wheelchairs are heavy and have rigid frames, making them only suitable for transport in adapted vehicles. The VIP 2 provides a great balance of comfort and transportability not found in other wheelchairs.

Product Description

Folding frame

The standout feature on the VIP 2 is its easily folding frame. This allows the wheelchair to be folded down to a compact size, and it will fit in all but the very smallest car boots. While the weight is a little heavier than a basic folding wheelchair, it is still liftable - depending on the options chosen it ranges from 22.3 - 25.9 kg.

The VIP 2 is available as either a transit wheelchair or self-propelled - the transit version saves 0.9 kg of weight, the self-propelled variant allows the user to move around under their own steam if able to propel.

Seating

The seat comes in two widths - 16 or 18 inches; this doesn't quite provide the same level of precise support as a fully configured model such as the Rea Azalea, but still allows for a good fit. The backrest is also available in two heights, and features tension-adjustable straps that can be individually adjusted for spinal curvatures. Third-party seating such as Jay and Matrx backs can also be fitted for those with more advanced seating needs.

The VIP can tilt up to 30° as standard, and can be upgraded to feature recline of up to 15° if desired. This allows for a relaxed seating position, and helps to relieve pressure. The optional reclining mechanism is designed to prevent sliding, whilst the tilt function maintains the balance of the wheelchair.

There are multiple adjustments and options available for the wheelchair. This includes elevating leg rests, which allow a "laid back" position when combined with recline. The standard curved headrest can be upgraded to a three-wing one if sideways support is required. Hemi armpads can also be supplied, particularly useful for those who have had strokes and need more support for their arm.

Our Verdict

The Karma VIP 2 Wheelchair is an impressive wheelchair, offering a good level of comfort and fit for those that need a tilt in space wheelchair that reclines. It must be emphasised that it does not provide the higher levels of support that standard models such as the Azalea and Ibis offer, and we would therefore not recommend it as an "all day" wheelchair. However, it is comfortable for a few hours use at a time, and offers a vital way of getting people who need tilt in space wheelchairs out and about.

If you require more complex seating, or a wheelchair suited to all-day use, then Ki Mobility's Liberty FT should be considered - it is a lighter folding tilt in space wheelchair with more advanced seating options.
